CHAPTER NINE

“Okay. Who’s next?”

“Chance Rogers.”

My heart began to beat uncontrollably, knowing that Chance’s case was up next. For hours, I sat and heard bail hearing after bail hearing. Some felony cases were credit card fraud or drug cases. Others were murder and rape cases. Many were granted bail. Some weren’t. Therefore, I didn’t know what to expect.

Within seconds, a door in the back of the courtroom opened. Chance appeared. He was being guided through the courtroom and in front of the judge by a female county sheriff. I tried to catch his eye, but he didn’t even hold his head up.

I hadn’t been able to talk to him since he was arrested. I drove to the police station the day that he was arrested, but those punk motherfuckers wouldn’t even let me talk to him before they shipped him off to the county. I knew that he was able to make phone calls during the day, so I sat by my phone in anticipation of his call.

I never got one.

I was able to call the jail and find out when his bail hearing was. That morning, I was at the county bright and early. After talking to the court clerk, I was told that Chance was given a public defender. I knew that Chance had money saved up, so I wondered why he wouldn’t call me to have me hire him a good lawyer that had experience fighting murder charges.

Before court began, I was given the chance to talk to his public defender, but that went nowhere. He didn’t know many details about the case and hadn’t talked much to Chance. It was like he’d just been given the damn case that morning. I wondered how he would be able to speak for Chance if he didn’t even know what the fuck was going on.

“Okay. Let’s get started. We have a lot of cases to get through today.”

The judge surprisingly seemed interested in every single case. He wasn’t the typical asshole authority figure that treated them all like criminals. I hoped that he would see past what Chance was being charged with and at least grant him bail so that he could fight this on the other side of the jail.

“Judge, Mr. Rogers is being charged with the first degree murder of Aeysha Walker and the attempted murder of her infant. She was seven months pregnant at the time of the murder.”

The judge couldn’t hold back a judgmental smirk as the state’s attorney told him Chance’s charges. “Thoughts on bail?”

“The defendant has no ties to the state. He was a ward of the state. He doesn’t have any family in Chicago. He doesn’t have any employment. There is evidence that he was attempting to leave the state a few weeks ago using false identification.”

Finally, Chance’s public defender spoke up. “Your Honor, the defendant does not have a record. The evidence against Mr. Rogers is circumstantial. There is no concrete evidence connecting him to the victim’s murder or to the identity of Reginald Barner…”
